Matthew died November 10, 2002 at home.
He is greatly missed at CCS, the Detroit Artists Market and the
Detroit art community.
The following words are from CCS President Rick Rogers.
By now, many of you have heard of the tragic
passing of Matthew Holland. I know that we all share a great sense
of loss at the death of someone who meant so much to the College.
Matt taught sculpture at CCS from 1987 to 2001. In addition to his
dynamism as a teacher and member of the Fine Arts Department, he was
a respected leader of the College as a whole. He was elected by his
faculty peers to chair the Faculty Assembly, where he served as
parliamentarian for an extended period.
For many years, he was the director of the annual Student
Exhibition, a gargantuan responsibility that called upon not only
his energy and dedication but his judgment and sense of fairness. He
also served as chairman of the committee that developed the
College's Foundation program and was the program's first director
and its first principal lecturer. Today's Foundation Department is
the direct outgrowth of Matt's efforts. These are just a few among
his many contributions to the College. Above all, I think we will
remember his joy in teaching, his commitment to his students, and
his deep devotion to his colleagues.
I know we will all miss him, and we join in extending our
condolences to his wife Stephanie and the members of their family.
We will let you know of memorial arrangements as we learn of them.
If you wish to write to Stephanie, her
