Hello, I went to High School with Matt, played drums in Marching Band, played in talent shows and even recorded at a 16 track studio together. We were also both eagle scouts in troop 389. I am so shocked by all of this. My heart and prayers to all of you, Matt always gave me a reason to smile. david burton

Matthew was an extremely talented artist and a very special person. I have some of his wonderful art in my home and in my office. He was able to bring those cold metal pieces to life and grace. Matt was especially kind and thoughtful to us after our son, Tobey Helveston, died in 1996. He made a bas relief for us of some of Tobey's "junk" that we found in his room. It is a special piece we keep in our living room. |

His impacct on many was huge to say the least, I for one might've never picked up a welder were eit not for him. One because he made alot shit look way rad by simply being behind it and two, no one else would've have believed I was capible, Matt never batted an eye in doubt. I can only see him laughing with these sorta squinting eyes and nodding and then we(anyone near and in on whatever the clever stuff he was puttin' on) would break into laughter... "Shock" doesn't even scratch the surface of how i have been feeling since i heard this shitty news. Only a few months back I was telling my boyfriend of how he was DJing and I was bartending at (Sterling's) a short lived dsank bar called Sardine Bar(way back , like 10 + yrs),he basicly premantaly pealed a layer of my brain off by simply spinning a 45 and playing it on 33 1/3, sounded like the darkest metal band ever, it was Barracuda by Heart, hilarious, and beautifully Brilliant... Man I dont want to come back to Detroit from LA knowing I won't run in to him at a Christmas party or two... I thank his loved ones and all his friends and although I never lived there through his short married years , his very beautiful wife that I met at his last Suzanne Hillberry Show made him so obviously happy. My deepest sympathy to all of Detroit. |

Hi, I went to high school with Matt and played in the marching band with him. Matt was one of the first loves of my life. His joyful spirit, amazing light, humility, humor, playfulness and talent were so present even in those awkward years.Even then, he had a sense of self and confidence that was rare. I haven't seen him in 20(?) years but his presence still lives on in my mind and my heart. I am deeply saddend that this has happened. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you (his family, friends and loved ones). His drumming, Def Lepard flag shorts and that incredible smile, that spoke volumes, will forever be in my memories. Peace and Blessings, Michele Van Vliet Olympia, Washington |

I grew up in Matt's neighborhood in the 70s. I remember Matt as fun, wild, playful and loving. He had these really fun inventions with wheels that he used to build and ride like a dare devil. He lived on the edge, with one foot firmly planted in each realm. Beautiful. Matt admired my brother Robert who was a drummer as well. He died in 1996. May they find each other (and all of their favorite musicians that have become spirit) to drum to their hearts' desire. May Matt's memory be a source of inspiration, strength, happiness and wisdom to all who knew and loved him.

Thank you all for the wonderful thoughts and words about my brother. Knowing how much love he spreads through this world makes our loss a little more manageable. |

For my 3-D Design class, I wanted to make a table using bendy wood and needed a lot of help. I'd sit in the chair outside the wood shop waiting for Matt to come and open up. He was so nice, sometimes I'd join him and others to have lunch at the Campus Cafe. He liked fried egg sandwiches like me. I'd see him at the Garden Bowl too. My table is in my living room and whenever I get compliments, I think of how Matt helped me make it and the time I spent getting to know him. He liked the form I made for the table, so I gave it to him. My heart goes out to his family and friends, he was a wonderful teacher, artist, and person. I will always remember him. |

Hey Stephen, Matt and I went to high school together in Farmington Hills. Later, I ran into him again while I was in the ID program at CCS. Like Jody, I always had a crush on him too. Was sad to hear that he passed. So young. My condolences. |

I first met Matt in 1997 at CCS. I loved Matts smile!! I loved watching him play at Wayne Sate. His band was then the Three Prong Adapter. We were very close friends. I even still have his leather jacket. I have kept it all these years. I am so shocked and sad today after reading the Alumni news of his passing. I always wondered what had happened to him. We lost touch. I am so happy that he was so succesfull is his art and music. He will be missed by many.

I am so shocked to hear this. Matt was my next door neighbor on Peterboro Street in Detroit. Matt made me a very cool dog, when I let him know I was heading to Australia. Fuck... life's not fair at all |

I loved this guy within a very odd relationship. We had a VERY similar vision which I believe made us both laugh at our history. The last time I saw Matt was at the Royal Oak flea mkt. As always the big-ass smile and affirming man-handshake. He was/is the kind of creator that spotted the little detailes in the way-far background. Matt could have easily hated me but instead, he gave me props for a project he noticed buried in the back of an old Maison Jansen liquor cabinet I had in the corner of my Ferndale flat at 925 Alberta. His upbringing and the way he showed respect are unmatched. I can honestly say that I never let Matt know how much I respected him while he was with us but I will NEVER forget how he conveyed his compliments and comments about my work. I suppose age and experience is where we see who we really are. Matt pointed this out to me way before I got it. |

I never thought Matt would pass before me.I just cant believe its so.He was my first drummer and a very good one at that.We would listen to kiss , Van Halen and a whole bunch of other stuff. When we started our first band together we sucked but at age thirteen we had time on our side.We drifted apart during high school but hooked again in the eighties to form the punk band THE FEDS that was one of the best summers of my life.I could go on and on with old stories but I,m not very good at this. I will never forget you Matt Blake. |

You have actually eeratcd some excellent points here. I specifically appreciate the way you've been able to stick so much thought into a relatively short post (comparitively) which creates it an thoughtful publish on your subject. In my opinion, you've presented the topic in a quite thorough yet concise manner, that is genuinely useful when someone wants to get the facts without spending too a lot time searching the Internet and sifting out the noise to discover the answers to their questions. I usually get so frustrated with so numerous in the final results inside the major SE's due to the fact they normally seem to mostly be filled with filler content that often isn't extremely sensible. If you don't mind I'm going to add this post and your blog to my delicious favorites so I can share it with my family. I appear forward to coming back to read your future posts as well. |
