Am delighted to see this site. I had a rehearsal space in 1980 in the Farwell Building when I was in the band Razor 1922, which later morphed into Figures on a Beach. Russell Sumner (keyboard player at one time with The 27) was our landlord. They were incredibly heady days, and there was a great vibe for creativity in that room we had. To this day, still my favorite (if a bit romanticized) rehearsal space. Would love to hear from anyone associated with the Farwell Building at that time. We used to have a great perch to watch the comings and goings at the Famous Door across the street. Related in a tangential way to the Corridor, does anybody remember the Bernhardt (sp?) Gallery on Grand River? Figures on a Beach did a very early show there in 1981, as well as, to my knowledge, being one of the first, if not the first band to play at The Gold Dollar Show Bar. We did a show there on our own and one with Retro... |

I went to high school with Russ (he'll always be "Russ" to me)at the old Warren Woods High School on 12 Mile and Schoenherr. I played piano too, but he mopped the floor with me every time. When he had the Farwell and I was at WSU, I wrote an interview piece on him for Streetlife Magazine. (I still have it on cassette!) He took me on a tour of the building and we ended up doing much of the interview on the roof overlooking the city. A moment for the muses, to say the least. Very cool. |

Hey: What about Mike Bobo, Jim Nuttal and Alton McLain, the first three artists in the building? (I am a horrible speller, so I may get the names wrong.) Thor and his brother are Thor and Leonard Hilldale. Jon Strand. Winnie Schutte. Bill Stroble. I was trying to find things about my daughter, Erin Somerville, and came across this. Very interesting. Dear Lee, Thanks so much for adding history to the Farwell Tribe. You showed me around the place those many years ago. We became friends, for which I am forever grateful. |

Thorsten or Thor, Emanuel Hilldale recently passed away after a short bout with cancer. I have moved to upstate New York and have been a stay at home dad to twin boys for the last 4 1/2 years. I have given up art because I believe I suck and found a new passion in helping needy children by giveing them clean, sanitary beds. My wife and I have been able to give out over 800 beds this year and hope to give away many thousands next year and start a national trend. And by the way, Hi everybody, especially you Lee. |

Hi, I was not a resident in the Farwell Building until the fall of 1979, and for not much more than a year after that. If anyone wants any more information on what I'm up to, please write to my E-mail address: sharpeyr@oneonta.edu Yolanda Sharpe

Does anyone remember Brian Gahagan, a painter who had a studio in the Farwell Bldg. in the 70s? I would appreciate it if anyone has any memories to share about him. I was a student at Cass Technical High School in 1974. It was New Year's Eve. Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" was very popular at that moment in time. I remember dancing with my girlfriends, giddy with song, life, youth . . . I remember reading "Howard Cosell" etched in one of doors, part of the building condemned and off limits, the stained glass ceiling. Marti Bommarito |

hello steven goodfellow and all the folk of the Cass Corridor and Detroit. I am living or should I say waning in flatbush Brooklyn. I did yesterday meet for the first time with a group called BeSAA the Bed Stuy Artists Association. They seem to me a vital and eclectic group with a good vibe. Not unlike HIP Ron Allens group and UCP that group of gorilla photographers that put detroit on the map for a minute. My website is: bobmckeownphoto.com let me know what you think. BM |

Kurt Novak and I shared a studio space on the 4th floor in the mid-to-late 70's. 1,800 sq. ft. including heat for very reasonable rent in a class building. Fond memories of tenant improvements, exploring the depths of the building, rooftop gatherings with friends, improvised plumbing systems, commercial 'bicentennial' license plates for alley parking, (still have 'em) performance art, street life, rowdy youth and the energy of downtown Detroit. I remember Lee and Jon, the rest is a dream. So sad to see its demise as documented on detroitblog. I still have a few old Farwell postcards from the 50s. Best Regards to all, you know who you are. Thank you Stephen. Jerry Grieser |

Also, as I have just become aware of this site, I remember hanging with Mike Bobo, Jim Nuttal and Lee Somerville was around too. And, there was Lesley Vinson and Alan Harvey, influential artist from those middle 70's |
