I joined Carlson Tuttle's original Open City Co-op on 3rd
(near Canfield --- I think those storefronts have been torn down)
sometime in 1970. Members had the option of paying
$2 each week for a bag of groceries. Carlson would take his pickup down
to Eastern Market each Sat morning, load up on fresh veggies and dairy,
then put together bags for pickup. This was in addition to his regular
stock of grains, peanut butter, etc.
IIRC Carlson left around the time John Martin and Co. moved to Canada.
I think I heard that Tuttle went south to Ky or Tenn.I was a sometimes
volunteer on Sat morns (though I've never been a morning person, so I
didn't do a LOT of them). I had been introduced to the Co-op by fellow
member Margie Cunningham who lived downstairs from me at Sheridan Court.
IIRC she was an art student from Farmington originally.
After Tuttle left, the Co-op somehow morphed into the Cass Coridoor
co-op. I'm a little fuzzy as to how that happened ... maybe someone else
can help. They ended up in the basement of an appt building at Cass and
Willis --- across Cass from the latter-day (formerly Cobb's) location. I got fairly
active while they were there, and usually ran the store 2 afternoons a
week --- this would be around 1972-1973. Robin Tillen was also very
active. I can't recall her major at Wayne, but she had long red hair
and lived for a while over at the Merrill-Palmer houses. Also, there
was a gal we called "Freddie" who was very active. Her name was Freda
and she as a nutrition major at WSU. She usually opened/closed the
store and did a lot of the ordering IIRC.

I remember the Cass Corridor Food Co-op running out of a storefront right on Woodward, south of Warren for awhile in the early 1970's. Was that a dream? |

Mike Kerman & Sandy Feldheim and often I started a food buying coop out of their house on 4th near Forest in the fall of '66 when we were all Monteith students. This outfit may have become later editions of a coop. Joe Fineman & Eleanor used to help out, too. |
