Would be interested in reminiscing with others about some of the cool bands who played the corridor. Can't forget Ted Lucas and The Horny Toads, Savage Grace (not really Corridor, but they played all the anti-war rallies at The Mall), Alice Cooper (rehearsed at the 1st UU before they were famous), Joni & Chuck Mitchell (at The Alcove), Bobby McDonald Trio, Prismatic Band (formerly Old Buck), Skip VanWinkle (regular at The New Miami), and 3 bands with which I played: The Lords, Okefenokee Swamp Band, The Inside Outside Band. I have lots of Lords photos as well as some Okefenokee MP3s on my website ... feel free to Hyper-Link to them. | ||

Another Corridor standout that I somehow overlooked on my list is Conrad Carlock. I ran into him a few months back, and he gave me a CD of some of his live performances from "back in the day". It was AWESOME. He was light years ahead of what many of us were trying to do back in the 70s and 80s. | ||

Michael Knight & Darlin' played the Song Shop for a spell Mick Vranich & Plankton at Alvin's. Billy C and His Killer Blues Band (1st Unitarian Church). I can be heard occasionally at The Music Suite in Toledo with the Eric Brazier Trio most Thursdays. It's mostly Jazz and a little bit of Blues. David Opatik has moved up north. | ||

I still remember Sixto Rodriguez...used to play frequently at the Decanter. Was very Dylanesque, liked to turn his back on the audience, was usually well toasted, had big problems in that area. I was working at Detroit General Hospital next to Greektown as a an emergency dept. psych social worker and we would often talk about his various problems. He had a woman manager with whom I think he lived or had some sort of domestic arrangement. Oh yeah, and he never used his first name, just went by Rodriguez. My friends and I loved his stuff. He did put out one LP. I still have a copy and it still sounds good today. Anybody else remember him? This would have been during the sixties... | ||

Rodriguez has been mentioned in a few threads here. I used to see him around well into the 90s, but I haven't lately. But then I don't spend much time in The Corridor these days, either. | ||

Going into the Wayback machine, does anyone remember when Debbie Duncan or Pam Smith performed around The Corridor? Both sang frequently at the original Circa. Both had a gospel background, but Debbie got into jazz and blues too. She worked for MANY yrs in L.A. doing sessions, clubs, concerts. She's based in Minnesota now and sounds better than ever. (She has some clips on Youtube) Last I heard, Pam stuck with the traditional gospel and had moved to NYC. I hear that she does session work too. And does anyone remember a gal blues-harp player --- I think she called herself "Clear Light" ?? | ||

Wow! Some in-depth knowledge there! Thanks everyone, I have added these names to the list of musicians of the Corridor (Click "Music" on the front of the site.) The next step would be to start fleshing out each artist and/or band, getting as mush content as possible. A long assignment, but we have time and I am confident this aspect of the site will get fleshed out. Please send any info, pics and MP3 files that can be gleaned. Permissions to use would also be nice. | ||

Well, that ended that. Here we are again. Nice pictures, Dennis Pruss. I still haven't communicated with you. What a multi-talent and all around regular guy you are, Dennis. I'm not hitting on you....just thinking about you. The weather has been so awful. I've had bronchitis since November. How is Suzy Wahl? She's mad at me about something and won't return my calls. Like, I can afford to lose friends at my age. Oh, by the way, I will be 64 in August. No, somebody else is. It can't be me. It's somebody else's mother or something. My God. We're almost 80. Just checked...it's David and Rosalyn. They played and lived in the Corridor in the late sixties/early seventies. Performed for years at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and on the streets of New Orleans. | ||

Bill Webster, Bob Fleck, Jane Allison Fleck as the New American Swinette Orchestra played Alvin's once or twice in 1980, then did a "Brunch with Bach" at the Art Institute in June of '81 the day before Bob & Jane moved to LA, never to return. Bill's then-fiance, Cecelia Hrodko (sp?) was at the DIA gig on piano, harp and dulcimer. Bill's harps, dulcimers and occasional banjo necks are still among the world's finest, check websterstrings on the 'web. I think that Bill, Jane and I also did an appearance or two at a bar that Robin Sommers (sp?) was managing around that time. Going way back, I played violin with the Spike Drivers in concert at DeRoy in the fall of '66, Dave Levine played cello and Irving Kirsch (sp?) played flute. Was one of their better concerts. After a long layoff from fiddle from that concert until spring, 1970 when Hostetter ragged on me to start fiddling again, I didn't play. I've run across Joe Fineman out here a few times in the course of the picture biz, he sez he doesn't pick mandolin any more. Every time I pass by the Lenny Somberg clinic, I grieve. I had hired him as a music reviewer in the fall of '67 when Art Johnston tapped me as entertainment editor of the newly minted "South End." He was a good writer, not to mention a member of the seminal Detroit folk rock band, "The Southbound Freeway." | ||

I played with David (of David and Rosalynn) for awhile at Alvin's Finer Delicatessen in '73 or so. Dave and Ro did move to New Orleans way back when. I believe they still own a house up behind the Fisher Building. We played all over Detroit from '69 to about '74. Dave and Ro won the kissing contest (to promote the new group "Kiss")which, I believe, was held locally or in Chicago. We also did a few gigs at the Open City coffeehouse at the Unitarian Church along about '69 or '70 when it operated under that name. I used to have a gig at Russel's Steak House at Michigan and Cass. There's a People Mover column right where I used to sit. I'm in Virginia Beach, now. I'm lucky to play with my wife, Laurie, and a cool couple from Memphis, Jack and Amy Adcock. They were very active in the Memphis Blues scene and have backed bands at Chicago Blues festival. He on percussion, she on bass. I told them to be on the watch for David and Rosalynn when they visited New Orleans. Sure enough, they ran into them and gave regards to all. I do remember playing with a young musician/artist named Stephen Goodfellow before his fame with the Layabouts (Hi, Stephen!). That gig we played in Wyandotte was supposed to have included Bill Hodgson, but he was a bit shy about playing accoustically at the time - he was used to the electric thing with drums and all. We'd sit in my studio and he just loved my old '58 Martin 00-17. Remember, Keith Aoki played with us along with Joe Lucido. Great artists and musicians, all! Those were good times. | ||

Hi Joe, I sure do remember that gig! I was so impressed by your fortitude. Despite a group of nasty hecklers, you played through like a trooper, and that was a good lesson for a young musician. I so enjoyed your comradeship. Great to hear from you. | ||
